Studied Sunday School Lesson

5. What did Isaiah say was coming in the future for Judah?
A captivity was coming..Assyria would destroy Syria and Israel but then she would attack Judah. God was in charge of this act because Judah was wicked and that was the punishment for their sins.

6. How did Garbiels appearances to Zacharias and to Mary compare? He came to them both separately and frighten the both of them. The angel of the Lord told them both to not be afraid and that they were going to have a son.

7. What were some of the significant statements give to Elizabeth about the son she would give birth to?
His name will be John, He shouldn’t touch alcohol or wine, he will be filled with the Holy Ghost before he is born, He will turn many Israelites to God, he will be a man with the Spirit and power of Elijah

8. What specific covenant would she realize was being fulfilled? For Mary, the Angel made five statements about her son.
- he would be great
- he would be know as the “son of the Highest”
- God was going to put her son on the throne of David
- He would reign over the house of Jacob forever
- Her son’s kingdom would never end

The covenant that was being fulfilled is the Davidic covenant, which had been given nearly a thousand years earlier: “And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever” (II Sam. 7:16).

9. What explanation and example did Gabriel give Mary to help her?
Gabriel’s answer was that God was going to accomplish this through a miraculous conception. She would conceive through the power of the Holy Spirit and give birth while she was still a virgin. This creative act of the Spirit was necessary because of Jesus’ preexistence and deity. He already was and would continue to be the holy Son of God. Here was the ultimate fulfillment of Isaiah 7:14 and 9:6-7. Galatians 4:4 assures us that this birth was for the purpose of our redemption so that we can be children of God.

10. How did Mary respond to Gabriel’s words?
Mary surrender and submission to God’s will, Mary simply stated, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word”
