Jesus
Predicts His Death
20 Some Greeks who had come to Jerusalem for the Passover
celebration 21 paid a visit to Philip, who was from Bethsaida
in Galilee. They said, “Sir, we want to meet Jesus.” 22 Philip
told Andrew about it, and they went together to ask Jesus.
23 Jesus replied, “Now the time has come for the Son of Man[a] to
enter into his glory. 24 I tell you the truth, unless a
kernel of wheat is planted in the soil and dies, it remains alone. But its
death will produce many new kernels—a plentiful harvest of new lives. 25 Those
who love their life in this world will lose it. Those who care nothing for
their life in this world will keep it for eternity. 26 Anyone
who wants to be my disciple must follow me, because my servants must be where
I am. And the Father will honor anyone who serves me.
27 “Now my soul is deeply troubled. Should I pray, ‘Father,
save me from this hour’? But this is the very reason I came!

A Grain of Wheat Must Die
20-21There were some Greeks in town who had come up
to worship at the Feast. They approached Philip, who was from Bethsaida in
Galilee: "Sir, we want to see Jesus. Can you help us?"
22-23Philip went and told Andrew. Andrew and Philip
together told Jesus. Jesus answered, "Time's up. The time has come for
the Son of Man to be glorified. 24-25"Listen carefully: Unless a grain of wheat is buried in the ground, dead to the world, it is never any more than a grain of wheat. But if it is buried, it sprouts and reproduces itself many times over. In the same way, anyone who holds on to life just as it is destroys that life. But if you let it go, reckless in your love, you'll have it forever, real and eternal. 26"If any of you wants to serve me, then follow me. Then you'll be where I am, ready to serve at a moment's notice. The Father will honor and reward anyone who serves me. 27-28"Right now I am storm-tossed. And what am I going to say? 'Father, get me out of this'? No, this is why I came in the first place. I'll say, 'Father, put your glory on display.'" A voice came out of the sky: "I have glorified it, and I'll glorify it again." |
John 12:20-27
King James Version (KJV)
20 And there were certain Greeks among
them that came up to worship at the feast:21 The same came therefore to Philip, which was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus. 22 Philip cometh and telleth Andrew: and again Andrew and Philip tell Jesus. 23 And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified. 24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. 25 He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal. 26 If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour. 27 Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour. |

The Message (MSG)
4-5Some of
them were won over and joined ranks with Paul and Silas, among them a great
many God-fearing Greeks and a considerable number of women from the aristocracy.
But the hard-line Jews became furious over the conversions. Mad with
jealousy, they rounded up a bunch of brawlers off the streets and soon had an
ugly mob terrorizing the city as they hunted down Paul and Silas. 1 Kings 8:41
The Message (MSG)
41-43 And
don't forget the foreigner who is not a member of your people Israel but has
come from a far country because of your reputation. People are going
to be attracted here by your great reputation, your wonder-working power, who
come to pray at this Temple. Listen from your home in heaven. Honor the prayers of the foreigner so that people all over the world will know who you are and what you're like and will live in reverent obedience before you, just as your own people Israel do; so they'll know that you personally make this Temple that I've built what it is. 1 Kings 8:42

The Ethiopian Eunuch
26-28Later God's angel spoke to
Philip: "At noon today I want you to walk over to that desolate road
that goes from Jerusalem down to Gaza." He got up and went. He met an
Ethiopian eunuch coming down the road. The eunuch had been on a pilgrimage to
Jerusalem and was returning to Ethiopia, where he was minister in charge of
all the finances of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians. He was riding in a
chariot and reading the prophet Isaiah.
